July 29th is the next Pedestrian Sunday Festival

21 Jun

Please note that unlike previous years, there will not be a Pedestrian Sunday Festival in Kensington at the end of June.

Although the roads will not be closed to traffic, this weekend will definitely be another great time to visit and enjoy the market.

Our 2nd of 3 festivals takes place on Sunday July 29th.

Our official road closure format & timeline is as follows:
Pedestrian Sunday Festivals – May 27th, July 29th, and September 30th – 12 to 7pm
Market Sundays – Sundays in August and September - August 5, 12, 19, 26 & September 2, 9,16, 23. 12 – 6pm
Market Sundays are a new format we’re trying out this year.  Rather than throw yet another huge party in the street (that can get a little overwhelming for the merchants and residents in the neighbourhood), we’ll simply restrict the entry of motor vehicles into Kensington in order to allow shoppers and strollers to safely spill off the sidewalks and enjoy the market as a pedestrian priority zone.  These are not programmed festivals – Market Sundays will be like any other busy and vibrant Sunday but with more room for everyone.

Gardening: Request for Quotation

18 Jun

The Kensington Market BIA is looking for a gardening service provider that can provide a turnkey solution for the planting of our new on-street planters/swing-gates in mid July, 2012.

This contract would require the provision of all filler, soil, and plant material, and labour.

There are 7 planters in total, and each planter is approximately 2′x2′x8′ or 32 cubic feet.

We are looking to plant tall native grasses that will grow densely so as to avoid garbage accumulation.

Please email quotes to coordinator@kensingtonmarketbia.ca , or call 416 826 2964 for further information.
Submissions required by June 30th, 2012.

Good times and connections at the BIA Social!

14 Jun

We had a lovely time at our 2nd BIA Social on Wednesday June 13th.

Lots of new faces came out to meet fellow Kensington residents and shop owners.

Our host Pouria also received a donation of one case of Augusta Ale beer from our very own Kensington Brewing Company, look this tasty brew on LCBO shelves soon!

Hope you can join us for the next BIA Social on July 11th!

14 Division to step up patrols in several downtown west communities

12 Jun

In my role as Coordinator for the Kensington Market BIA, I attended the Town Hall meeting held June 12th by 14 Division at Ryerson Public School. Below are the tweets I shared earlier this evening about the plans for additional patrols starting on Friday.

This is only a small snapshot of what was explained to those in attendance, and does not reflect the broad discussion that took place between the community members in attendance, the panel of officers, and Councillor Adam Vaughan.

For more information, please contact 14 Division – 416 808 1400, or Councillor Adam Vaughan’s office – 416 392 4044.

(ProjectPost is the name of the program)

Just arrived at #14Division TO Police Town Hall regarding new #ProjectPost starting Friday in downtown West. Stepping up patrols.

-

New policing program is in response to “historic rivalrys and violence between 14 & 51 Division” #ProjectPost #TOPolice

-

Proposing to deploy more officers in downtown west area over 15wk period – more enforcement & high visibility #ProjectPost

-

#ProjectPost also about connecting #TOPolice with community to discuss safety concerns anonymously. Use of force to be minimal.

-

Deployment of additional officers is intended to keep community safe – predominantly foot & bike patrol. #ProjectPost #TOPolice

-

“Intent is to come in and surgically remove those people that are harmful to the community.” #ProjectPost #TOPolice

-

Maintenance strategy will continue after 15wks period of #ProjectPost. “Not coming in as occupying army” #TOPolice

Several Kensington Market merchants and residents submitted deputations and spoke at the May 29th Committee of Adjustment meeting against the Big Box development being proposed at Bathurst and Nassau St.
