Market Sundays – August 5th to September 23rd

26 Aug

Kensington’s first season of Market Sundays began on August 5th and runs weekly, on Sunday afternoons from 12 to 6pm, until September 23rd.

Sunday August 5th, 12th, 19th & 26th + Sunday September 2nd, 9th, 16th & 23rd – 12 to 6pm
Our final event of the year is Pedestrian Sunday on September 30th – 12 to 7pm

Market Sundays are like a regular Sunday in Kensington, but without any new motor vehicles coming through the main commercial streets of the market.  Those who are parked can stay and exit safely as needed.

Where Pedestrian Sunday festivals are ‘car-free’ and have programmed entertainment, Market Sundays are ‘car-lite’ and have no programming.  This is a new BIA initiative that aims to bring more business to the area by providing pedestrians a unique environment with more room to spill off the sidewalks while shopping & strolling throughout most of the market.

Info for Locals: Please remember that timely access can be granted, as needed, to local residents or business owners who require vehicular access during a Market Sunday.  BIA Coordinator, Yvonne Bambrick, will always be on-call and on-site during all street events – call 416 826 2964 anytime for assistance, or in case of emergency.

Planters / Swing-gates being installed & planted this week

25 Jul

As per community consultations in the fall & winter, Kensington Market’s new planters with swing-gates are finally being installed this evening, and will be filled/planted on July 26 with a variety of native grasses.

In collaboration with Councillor Adam Vaughan, the Kensington Market BIA will hold a brief media launch on the morning of Friday July 27th.

The City of Toronto, and the Kensington Market BIA worked cooperatively to develop a swinging gate attached to a planter following 8 years of temporary road closures in Kensington for Pedestrian Sundays.

This new seasonally permanent infrastructure will allow the streets of the market to more easily function as pedestrian priority zones during permitted street events.

These swing-gates are attached to a planter at one side of the street in roughly the same locations as the temporary barriers used for Pedestrian Sunday events. The swing-gate barrier can be easily rolled out across the street – they are moveable allowing emergency  vehicles to access the neighbourhood.

These planters/swing-gates, which each feature an iconic photograph of Kensington Market that has been lasered into the steel gate, are owned and paid for by the Public Realm Office, and will be maintained by the Kensington Market BIA.  The City will remove the planters/gates in the fall for snow removal purposes over the winter.

July 29th is the next Pedestrian Sunday Festival

21 Jun

Please note that unlike previous years, there will not be a Pedestrian Sunday Festival in Kensington at the end of June.

Although the roads will not be closed to traffic, this weekend will definitely be another great time to visit and enjoy the market.

Our 2nd of 3 festivals takes place on Sunday July 29th.

Our official road closure format & timeline is as follows:
Pedestrian Sunday Festivals – May 27th, July 29th, and September 30th – 12 to 7pm
Market Sundays – Sundays in August and September - August 5, 12, 19, 26 & September 2, 9,16, 23. 12 – 6pm
Market Sundays are a new format we’re trying out this year.  Rather than throw yet another huge party in the street (that can get a little overwhelming for the merchants and residents in the neighbourhood), we’ll simply restrict the entry of motor vehicles into Kensington in order to allow shoppers and strollers to safely spill off the sidewalks and enjoy the market as a pedestrian priority zone.  These are not programmed festivals – Market Sundays will be like any other busy and vibrant Sunday but with more room for everyone.
